The weather conditions were just perfect for a game of cricket. It was warm and the sun was beaming down on the Hatfield Peverel Cricket Ground.
Maldon’s skipper (Jas) lost the toss & HP elected to bat first on their home turf correctly at the toss and elected to bat first on their home turf.
Sam Collins & David Boyden opened the bowling for Maldon but unfortunately, after David’s very first ball in the second over he suffered a groin injury. He bravely tried to carry-on, but the pain was too much and sadly he could not take any further meaningful part in the game. However, Andy Phipps stepped to bowl in his place and bowled 4 overs & conceded only 5 runs with 3 maidens.
Andy, then got a little too tired as he is no longer a ‘Spring Chicken’ and when fielding at deep square leg he found a chair on which to rest his aching body. Not sure what happened next, but it was either gravity, his weight or both – while sitting on the chair the furniture just collapsed leading to excessive laughter all over the ground.
Stato & Rufus Miller bowled spin at 1st change, and both did a tremendous job – Stato bowled 5 overs for 21 & Rufus bowled 7 overs, took 1 wicket for a mere 24 runs.
The pick of the bowlers today was Calum Figg who took his 1st ever 5 wicket hall. He bowled with pace, aggression and pin-point accuracy and I’m sure that he will go onto get many more 5 wicket halls.
HP finished their innings after 40 overs with a score of 206. This was always going to be a ‘tall order’ for us as we only had 10 players to begin with, reducing to 9 with David being injured.
Stato and Sam Collins opened the batting with Statogoing on to score 25. Rufus Miller was the Top Scorer with 30 – this included finding the boundary 4 times and a healthy strike rate of 83.
Next up for the Sunday X1 is Canewdon away for a friendly game & naturally we all wish David a speedy recovery.
