Colts

2021 saw the welcome return of a full cricket programme across all age groups, but not without challenges. The cancellation of winter training after a year lost meant lower numbers in our younger age groups as we continue to encourage new players into the club.

All age groups were able to fulfil a decent level of league fixtures with some credible performances, despite some availability and weather issues. Congratulations to the U15 Div 2 side who finished unbeaten, league winners.

Our U12 & U14 sides produced some excellent individual and team performances in the respective county competitions and competed well in both events against traditionally strong oppositions.

The principle aim of the Maldon CC Colts programme is to provide a safe environment that allows all players to develop their cricket skills whilst at the same time making new friends, being part of a team and most importantly having fun.

Our structure creates a pathway for players to develop and progress from junior sides into adult cricket and a lifelong affiliation with Maldon Cricket Club. The club is very proud that all senior XIs start 2022 with current Colt’s representation across the sides.

Going into 2022, our intention is to build and grow our Colts sides to ensure we maintain a solid pathway through the age groups and provide the quantity and quality of cricket we should expect as a club.

TRAINING
Training will run each Friday evening from 29 April to the end of August. Last year’s change was deemed positive with increased turnout and achieved its intentions of creating a more inclusive and social environment for players and parents. It is a great way to start the weekend, with all age groups in a structured coaching environment, the bar open for parents and club members, not forgetting the benefit of Drapers’ unique microclimate!

U9 – U11           6.15pm – 7.15pm
U13 – U15         6.30pm – 7.45pm

Training will be run by age group managers, but it is our intention that this year that senior players will also be involved in running sessions, hopefully a huge benefit to our young players.

FIXTURES
All four age groups have been entered into the Central Essex District League and Cup competitions.

We also have entries into the Essex County competitions with an U12 side in the Brian Taylor Trophy, an U14 side in the Alastair Cook T20 Trophy and an U16 side in the Trevor Bailey Matchplay Shield. I encourage all club members to show their support for these teams, especially at home fixtures.

NEW MEMBERS
The club is always keen to welcome new players, especially across our U7-U9 age group and at U11. If you know of anyone who might be interested in joining the club, please ask them to contact me directly or any of the Colt’s Management Team.

VOLUNTEERS
I would like to thank all parent volunteers who take the role of age group managers and assist on match days, but I make no apology in asking for more support. Each age group needs 2 co-managers to share responsibility and we should not have to rely on the same few individuals. It is a very rewarding experience and will enable us to enhance the cricket available to our younger players.

On behalf of the Colt’s Management Team at Maldon CC, we are looking forward to seeing you all and excited at the potential for a great season of cricket with a fantastic group of young players.
