4s Maintain Promotion Push

The Maldon 4th team were back on the road this weekend and made the long drive to Melton St Audry’s on a cloudy but warm afternoon. Joe Figg won the toss for a change and put Melton into bat. Opening bowlers Callum Figg and Luke Sanders bowled with accuracy as always and restricted Melton to 17 from the first ten overs with both of the Melton batsman laying and missing on numerous occasions.

Soon after Maldon were dealt a blow when Callum had to leave the field due to a recurring back injury having only bowled five overs. Xavier Sciellier-Giles and Josh Lawes continued where the opening bowlers had left and Xavier picked up both of the opening batsman’s wickets as a result of the team’s accurate bowling. Stuart Coker and Joe Gregory both took smart catches as Al Johnson and Dave Blackboro claimed four wickets between them before Luke returned to claim the 7thwicket of the innings thanks to a great reaction catch in the slips by Callum.

Melton finished their innings on 125 for 7 from their 40 overs. This was another fine bowling and fielding display by the 4s and once again shows why they are still pushing for promotion late in the season.

The Maldon chase started poorly when Steve Brown was caught down the leg side by the wicket keeper from a delivery that kept rising. Joe Gregory and Stuart Coker put on 54 for the second wicket with both playing great shots all over the pitch.

Joe was caught and mid on for 23 which brought Joe Figg to the crease. Both Stuart and Joe played aggressive shots as well as demonstrating a good forward defensive. A partnership of 65 ensued before Joe was bowled having reached his half century. Jason Morgan hit the winning runs scoring 6 not out with Stuart finishing a fine innings on 44 not out.

Maldon travel to Felixstowe next Saturday looking to keep the pressure on the top two sides.
