Maldon Two’s won by 11 runs in a tense but exciting away match against Easton in the Two Counties Division 5 on Saturday.
Maldon travelled to Suffolk more in hope than expectation with several regulars missing, giving an opportunity to four youngsters promoted from the third team. And they didn’t disappoint.
Led by captain Ben Gibbons with a belligerent 76, and Jamie Goldstein with a powerful 50, Maldon set the hosts a challenging target of 199 from 45 overs. All the batters chipped in, with key contributions from Lee Monk (20) and Ben Foster (14) late on, which would ultimately make the difference. Will Crookall was the pick of the Easton bowlers with 3 for 31 from 12.
The Maldon youngsters came into their own after tea with energetic fielding from Angus Beames, Cam Blackboro and the chirpy Joe Bird. Excellent opening spells from Callum Figg, taking his maiden 2nd team wicket, alongside the ever reliable Jack Riley (1 for 33 from 12 overs) pinned Easton down.
The result was never really in doubt until the final 10 overs when Easton woke from their mid afternoon slumber to make things interesting. Easton batter Sam Hall took the battle to Maldon with a dynamic 78 from 57 balls until Reece Bawden with 3 for 54 from 12, snared Hall’s wicket, aided by a superb finger-tip catch by Archie Wright at cow corner.
The blend of youth and experience and a fiery team spirit enabled another Two’s triumph on the road.
