Ladies Chase For Victory

9 ladies from Maldon Cricket Club took to the field rather nervously against a strong Chelmsford Willows side.

With a fast outfield and short boundaries, opening bowlers Digweed and Dack were dismayed to see the score climbing steadily. A debut over for Emma Herron ably supported the attack. A wicket for Digweed in her final over saw a change of fortunes. Willows were 74 for 1 after 10 overs and looked confident to double their score.

Bethan Bailey had other ideas. Superb bowling in her 4 over spell changed the game completely. A hat-trick only prevented by the returning retired batter hitting a six! Consistent length from Thornett kept the runs to a minimum adding a wicket in her third over and with only 1 run coming from the final over the Chelmsford team finished on 120 for 8.

Maldon began their innings superbly with Dack retiring on 28 and Bills retiring on 27.

A beautifully bowled ball dispatched captain Walton for 6. After 10 overs the away team were looking composed on 86 for 1. Digweed (22 not out) controlled the tempo of the next few overs, ably supported by Thornett (15 not out), who hit the winning runs in the 16th over.

Brilliant bowling gave Bailey her first 5 wicket haul with figures of 5 for 13 off 4 and Thornett 1 for 17 off 4.

An amazing team performance and a great win against a young, determined side.
