The Sunday XI’s visit to Rettendon almost started as a tri-team tournament when Galleywood also turned up, but despite their fixture secretary’s protestations they conceded they had got it wrong.
In hindsight we would probably have done better against Galleywood. This was a Rettendon side whose pre-game warm up was beer and loud music.
Maldon batted first and got off to a good start with a quick fire 37 from Cameron Blackboro and 10 from Stuart Coker. This was followed by 15 apiece from Angus Beames and Joe Entwhistle.
Things then went rapidly downhill with a batting collapse that saw the remaining 6 wickets fall for just 25 runs, the only notable score being 16 not out from Luke Reeve, leaving Maldon to defend 109 runs.
After some more beer and the lighting up of the BBQs, Rettendon went into bat and despite the positive attitude displayed throughout and good bowling from Luke Reeve (2 wickets), Angus Beames (1 wicket), Joe Entwhistle and David Blackboro (1 wicket) it was not enough to prevent Rettendon from reaching their target inside 19 overs.
The party began in earnest, it’s just a shame we didn’t have a victory this time to celebrate.
