After last week’s pre-season victory, the 4th XI travelled deep in to Suffolk to take on St Margaret CC 2nd XI. On a bitterly cold afternoon, Captain Joe Figg lost the toss and the Dons were asked to bat first.
Looking to build a solid platform, Maldon lost opener Richard Buckby early for just four runs, which brought Mark Thorn to the crease. Thorn (35) and opener, Steve Brown (12) built a solid foundation for the team to build on. After Thorn departed, Alex Strong arrived at the crease and scored a quick fire 25 off 21 balls.
After several wickets in quick succession, Jason Morgan joined his Captain at the crease looking to set a competitive target for the hosts to chase. As Morgan held down one end, captain Figg raced to quick half century off 38 balls. Maldon finishing on 178/5 from their 40 overs.

After the rain forced an extended tea-break, the visitors opened the bowling attack with Luke Sanders and Callum Figg (pictured). Both bowlers set the tone superbly and collected three wickets apiece, with Sanders bowling fiver overs, for twenty one runs. Callum Figg also bowled five overs, collecting his three wickets for just twelve runs including two maidens – which included an impressive caught and bowled.
With the home side struggling to get to grips with the visiting bowling attack, Jas Baines and Will Hayes were brought on and continued in the same vein as their team mates. Hayes picked up a wicket with his first ball, whilst Baines also collected a wicket in his first over. Hayes finished with impressive bowling figures two overs, went for two runs and collected two wickets. “Boom Boom” finished proceedings for the afternoon though, as he also collected two wickets from 2.3 overs, whilst leaking just four runs.
The Dons wrapping up victory in just 14.3 overs, winning by 133 runs whilst not a single batsman for the hosts managed to reach double figures, as they were bowled out for 45.
After a great start to the season, Joe Figg and his side are on the road again next Saturday as they travel to Boxted 1st XI, who started the 2021 season on Saturday with 270 run defeat against Ipswich & East Suffolk CC 2nd XI.
