Ladies Start With Narrow Defeat

Report with thanks to Jessica Pugh.

On a chilly Friday night at the Prom, Maldon ladies started their 20/20 campaign by hosting Great Waltham. After losing the toss Maldon were asked to bat.

Maldon Ladies vs Great Waltham Ladies. Prom Park, Maldon. Friday 30 April 2021.

After an unfortunate early run out, Izzy Collins and Rosie Digweed (pictured) steadied the ship and put on what ended up being the biggest partnership of 21 in a difficult innings. When Rosie departed for 16 wickets then fell at regular intervals and despite the stubborn resistance of Sue Thornett Maldon ended up all out for 36 in 18 overs.

Maldon rallied well in the field despite their disappointing total and Waltham were made to work incredibly hard for their runs due to the tight and effective bowling of Rosie Digweed and Bethan Bailey in their opening spells and Ellish Punchard and Jessica Pugh following on. Bethan and Jessica both ended up with 2 wickets a piece and a good all round fielding display was capped off by a fine single stump run out from square leg by Jessica.

The game finished bizarrely when in the 13th over needing 4 to win after a no ball Jessica hit the stumps from the resulting free hit ball and it deflected down past the boundary for 4 winning byes.

All in all a good competitive first run out for the ladies first match of the season. Next Friday they continue their campaign away to Kelvedon.
