Second XI Suffer Defeat

The second team travelled to East bergholt after their promising start the week before. Captain Saxton called correctly and chose to bowl on a green track that was tricky to distinguish from the rest of the square.

Opening bowlers Jack Bowen and Jim Gregory were then subject to an early onslaught as East Bergholt reached 83 after 11 overs. Gregory 2-44 made the breakthrough with the assist of another stunning Harry Grant catch.

Maldon then attempted to apply the brake pedal with 2 wickets apiece for Jack Riley 2-64 and Reece Bawden 2-60. The introduction of spin in the form of James Ellis 2-30 accounted for the centurion Pickford and claimed a second wicket via a stunning thanks to the excellent glovework of Lee Monk.

Maldon stuck to their task throughout and were rewarded when Jack Bowen 1-42 returned to claim the final wicket in the final over to bowl the hosts out due 250.

In reply Maldon were immediately behind the rate and after the departure of Cameron Blackboro for 17 Matt Shinn attempted to counter attack before holing out for 26.

An excellent 54 from Pete Rose together with aggressive running form Harry Grant kept Maldon just about in sight but Rose’s departure led to the last 4 wickets falling for 7 runs to leave Maldon 174all out and East Bergholt victors by 76 runs.

In spite of the heavy defeat at no point did the team surrender an earned a solid 8 points from the defeat. Next week back to Draper’s.
