Maldon 4th XI’s pre season started in glorious conditions at Hatfield Peveral Cricket Club against Galleywood 4th XI. The sun was shining and sun cream applied. A mixture of youth and experience took to the field first, with Captain Joe Figg, having one the toss and electing to bowl first.
Callum Figg and Finlay Jones opened the bowling and bowled extremely well with pace and accuracy with five maidens in the first ten overs between them. They missed the edge of the bat by centimetres on more than one occasion and both deserved a wicket.
After ten overs Galleywood were restricted to just 18 runs. As a result of the pressure caused by the opening bowlers, the first wicket fell thanks to a mix up between the two Galleywood opening batsman. Daniel Baker threw the ball in and Joe Figg took off the bails.

Wickets fell quickly after the run out as the Galleywood batsman tried to increase the run rate. Daniel Baker took 3 quick wickets, his first senior wickets for the club, with William Savill taking several good catches at midwicket. William Hayes restricted the scoring with a fine opening spell of left arm bowling that brought two maidens.
Charlie Figg, playing his first senior cricket match for Maldon, took his first wicket thanks to accurate bowling and another good catch by William Savill. Mason Foakes took three wickets in his spell of bowling before Hayes returned to take his first senior wicket for Maldon thanks to a superb catch by Jamie Brown. Galleywood were all out for 101 with the young bowling attack proving what a talented group the club has developed.
Following tea, captain Joe Figg opted to put the youngsters at the top of the order to chase down the target of 102.
Wickets fell regularly but the scoring and shot selection was positive. Fine knocks by Jason Morgan (26) and Callum Figg (18) ensured that the result was never in doubt with Finlay Jones (14) and Joe Figg (8) finishing not out with the skipper hitting the winning runs to ensure Maldon won by 3 wickets with 12 overs to spare.
