Getting To Know: Mike Smith

In a new series, the Clubs media team have fired the same thirteen questions at club members from all years, ages and teams as we get to know about their club records, their funniest moments, their favourite tea item & much more.

In today’s feature, we welcome Mike Smith.

Nickname: Smudger

What year did you join MCC: 2000 (ish)

Best player I’ve played with: For one game Alastair Cook but a few memories of standing at the non strikers end watching David Randall play proper shots and then me teaching him some that  definitely weren’t in any coaching book.

Best player I’ve played against: One cricket week stood at mid on watching Junior Murray of West Indian fame smash several balls past me

Highest Maldon Score: 100 not out

Best Maldon figures: 7-47

Favourite item at tea: cake, I love the cake

Favourite ground played at: Copford – that tree, memories of sheep throwing his toys out of the pram

Cricketing hero: Sir Lord Ian Botham

Favourite MCC memory: scoring my hundred and the look on Steve Gozz’s face when Neil Foz didn’t wide a ball that pitched 2 strips away because to quote him “if I call too many wides smudger might not get his ton”

Funniest thing ever seen on a cricket field: Sheep stomping and shouting “no no no, I’m bowling quite well” when Brownie suggested Matt Adams had a bowl, after a bit of prompting from Steve Harris and Matt Adams. Just realised I could have left that this question at Sheep (sorry mate)

Prediction for 2021: Andy Phipps opens the batting and bowling, Mikel pulls his trousers up after every ball bowled, seriously though Ollie Hull scores a 100 in Men’s cricket, he makes batting look easy

Maldon III vs Melton St. Audrys – Saturday 18th May 2013.
