The 3rd XI travelled to Boxted with a full strength side looking to secure maximum points. Boxted won the toss and elected to bat first.
The Maldon bowlers bowled well on a good batting track and restricted the scoring well picking up a couple of early wickets through Charlie Figg and Michael Newman. The Boxted opening batter batted extremely well without giving any chances to the Maldon fielders and reached his century playing extremely well. Further wickets from Newman and Mike Smith brought in the Boxted number 5 who raced to 77 from 30 odd balls.
The ball sailed everywhere as the batter played superbly hitting good balls for boundaries. Callum Figg and Joe Gregory combined to take his wicket which would prove pivotal in the team’s win.
Joe Gregory and Andrew Barnes opened the batting looking to chase down the 281 runs needed for victory. They approached the chase well and set the tone for the sides innings. Barnes reached 20 runs quickly before being bowled. Stuart Coker and Gregory added further quick runs and when Coker was well caught behind Alex Strong continued the positive batting.
Joe Figg joined Gregory after Strong was caught well on the boundary. Both continued to bat positively, and when Gregory was caught for a excellent 82 runs and Mike Smith was caught behind, Josh Servis joined Figg. A 95 run partnership was played out with both scoring quickly. Servis was caught behind for a well made 29 bringing Charlie Figg to the middle to join his Dad.
Thanks to the tempo of the run chase the run rate was now less than a run a ball and when Figg senior hit a six into the car park he reached his century.
Following a smart piece of fielding Joe was run out soon after leaving Figg junior and Al Johnson needing 6 runs from 12 balls which they did with 7 balls remaining.
This was a great win and was the highest 3rd XI chase in the club’s history.
